Who doesn’t dream of being a superhero? It wouldn’t get much better than being able to fly, leap across tall buildings, sling webs and more. The idea of being a superhero seems to resonate with middle school students also. This lesson allows you to focus on drawing self-portraits with correct facial proportions without all the pressure. Since students are creating “cartoon superhero versions”  of themselves, the pressure to be perfect is gone and students are invested in sharing more about themselves. Be prepared for some students to want to be supervillains, but even those turn out pretty impressive.

This lesson could be used to start a collaborative project with the language arts teacher where students write comic book stories to go with their covers. If you are digitally gifted, this could even be an interesting Photoshop lesson using the students own portraits and some fun green screen techniques.

This great Art Ed lesson plan is 100% FREE to download! Use it in your classroom and share with your colleagues. For more free lessons like this one, visit our Lessons Page and download them all!
